River Calder – Paddle Cleanup!

When we paddle, we all too often see the effects of plastic waste strewn in the trees and river banks. We are in a unique position as paddlers, as we can collect plastic from places others are unable to access.

Join us this Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend where we will be cleaning up a stretch of the River Calder in Horbury.

We will prepare a range of craft (canoe’s, paddleboards and kayaks) to help comb the river of debris and rubbish along the banks. Paddling with us will be free, so why not come along for a couple of hours and have some fun on the water and help clean up our local environment!

A Safety briefing will be provided by qualified coaches, All Equipment and PPE for collecting rubbish will be provided and all equipment and safety wear for staying safe ion the water will be provided.

Annual Memberships now due for renewal

If you have not already renewed, you can do so online at: https://membermojo.co.uk/westyorkshirecanoeclub/renew

We would like to thank all members for your support over the last 12 months. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the club has seen a period of growth and expansion and managed to plan regular paddling sessions, seeing new members join and be enthused by the sport with existing members improving their skills.

Membership for paddlers who joined the club prior to August 2020 will now be able to renew their membership. A valid membership is required to join us on any paddling sessions, for insurance and safety purposes. Paddlers who’s membership has lapsed will be asked to renew before joining a paddle.

In August of 2020, the club extended membership renewals by 6 months free of charge, due to the ongoing restrictions preventing us running sessions. To bring our membership year back into sync with the club rules (membership is October to October) and as a result of ongoing issues with our online payments, we are offering a free membership renewal for the next 6 months. You will be able to renew as normal, but there will be no charge at the end.

Although the start of 2022 will still have its challenges, we are keen to deliver regular sessions and look at returning to pool sessions at Dewsbury Swimming pool as soon as safely possible.

We’d love for you renew your membership and to be part of the journey in 2022. Sincere thanks to all those members who have renewed over the last few weeks.

You can sign into our membership portal and update your details (including any linked members) and add any family members to your family membership, if required. You will not require a password.

Saturday 15th January

This week we are running a river session on the River Wharfe. Suitable to paddlers who have done some moving and white-water work with us.We will monitor the river levels very closely, however at the minimum required levels the trip will not be suitable to beginners to moving water. At higher levels, the club will make a decision on individual competency. Due to the  ongoing Omicron variant progressing throughout the country, we want to keep car shuttles to a minimum and as such we will only have limited numbers on this session. Conditions will be expectedly very cold, both on and off the water, so it is imperative you are dressed appropriately for the environment. A proper wetsuit and CAG Jacket or dry suit with underlayers will be required. This is not a coach led paddle but lead by suitably competent paddlers with knowledge and experience to take people on this grade of water. For full details and to register to the session, please go to the calendar page! https://www.westyorkshirecanoeclub.com/calendar/

Saturday 30th October

This week we are running a river trip, either from mytholmroyd to Sowerby Bridge or a session at Sowerby Bridge.

Suitable for most paddlers who have done some river work before. This is not a coach led paddle but lead by suitably competent paddlers with knowledge and experience to take people down this grade of water.

For full details and to reguister to the event, please go to the calendar page! https://www.westyorkshirecanoeclub.com/calendar/

Saturday 12th June

Events for this weekend have been added to the calendar.

This week we are running morning sessions on the river and afternoon sessions on Pugney’s. We will run tasters sessions at both locations.

There is no rain forecast this week so the river will be at the normal level.

Morning river session:

10.00 – 12.00pm

10.00 – 12.00pm Taster session

Afternoon Pugney’s session:

1.00 – 3.00pm

1.00 – 3.00pm Taster session

If the sessions become full we will add a further sessions. If anyone is feeling brave the river is quite low and slow flowing so would be suitable for paddle boarding if any members have a board and want to give it a try on the river.

The café at the river is open now until 9 – 1pm so if you want a sandwich you can grab a butty before getting on the water.

The cost for borrowing equipment is £10.00 per person for any session and tasters sessions are £15 per person.

Anyone who has not paddled with the club before MUST complete a taster session before joining regular sessions, this allows us to assess any new members and run over club safety procedure’s etc. Taster sessions can also be booked on the website .

PLEASE can all participants bear in mind there is still a high risk of Covid infection and while we are allowed a larger number of people on the water social distancing must remain in place off the water. Please ensure when coming along to sessions you do not socialise with other members while sorting out kit etc. and once you have picked up your kit move away from the trailer area and sort out your kit with your family members or bubble.

Sessions Cancelled – Saturday 10th April

Unfortunately we have to postpone all sessions for this coming Saturday (10th April), as several of our coaches and helpers have had notification from the NHS app to self isolate.

The club takes the safety and well being of all particpants very seriously, so we have decided that due to a reduced number of coaches able to run the sessions, we do not have adequite cover to safely deliver sessions. As such, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel this Saturday.

We will move all bookings onto the following Saturday 17th April (at the same time). If this is not convenient for you, we can look to arranage for you to attend a different session in the future. Please contact us if you do not wish to be on the next sessions and would prefer a credit or refund.

We can only apologise for this but I’m sure you all know we always put everyone’s safety as a top priority.

We thank you for your understanding.
