You can book your place for the session as well as pay on line if you need to borrow any kit etc.

Saturday 11th july

We will run another session tomorrow Saturday 11th July. Unfortunatley after all the rain this week the rivers will be too high so we will have to paddle on the canal. We will check later this evening where is the best place to meet and will update early tomorrow on Facebook.

We are just trialling our new booking system this week so please register for our session tomorrow if you plan to come along – you can also pay online or pay by card tomorrow. Please give this a try as it will enable us to manage the sessions better.

We will also set up a Facebook Group with paddlers who are coming along tomorrow so we can update you if needed. Some have asked for a Whatsapp Group also so we can look at setting this up as well.

Please message us on Facebook or e mail: to club secretary to let us know what kit you requie.

Online registration for this event is closed

river session sat 27th june

We are now able to begin to run some form of club sessions but only on rivers at the moment and not on Pugneys for now.
We are looking to run a trip on the Calder this Saturday, I’m thinking to start at The Horbury Junction car park and paddle down towards Pugneys, past the now very small rapids and then onto the canal, paddle back up the canal and then back onto the river and back up to the car park.
The trip will be limited in numbers dependant on the number of coaches etc. and at this moment will only be open to club members with their own kit. There could be a possibility for me to collect a couple of boats etc. but this will be very limited.
There will be extra consent forms etc. to be completed due to the Covid situation and social distancing will apply throughout the trip.
The trip will be suitable for almost all paddlers but please do not just turn up – you must book to attend. I am thinking to meet around 10am in the car park but full details will be sent to all who are attending.
If you are interested in participating please drop a message on Facebook or send me a mail:
to club secretary

We are also working on an online booking system to enable you to book a trip online to ensure you have a place. We will update once this is up and running.

Coronavirus Update

Firstly we would like to thank all club members for their patience over the last few months. It has not been a great start to the year paddling wise due to the current pandemic situation. I’m sure you are all just as frustrated as we are especially given the fantastic weather we have seen during the last few weeks. We have been following Government guidelines and as such had to suspend all club activities.

It would appear that the light at the end of the very long tunnel is now beginning to burn a little brighter and offer some glimmer of hope.

The Government have now relaxed the lockdown conditions allowing groups of up to 6 persons to gather together. In line with this British Canoeing have today released new guidelines that will allow us to begin to look at reinstating some form of club sessions. The basis of this at the moment would be in groups of maximum 6 persons (1 coach and 5 participants). At the moment we can’t use Pugneys but in theory we could look to run sessions on the local river for members with own kit and potentially members wishing to borrow kit.

We are putting together the relevant risk assessments to comply with British Canoeing to ensure sessions will be covered by insurance etc.           We will also be putting together an online booking system where members will be required to book online if they wish to join a session and borrow kit etc.

While we are hopeful to get back onto Pugneys in the near future one positive that has resulted from the lockdown is that the river Calder is the cleanest we have ever seen and actually a pleasure to paddle at the moment even though it is a little low at present.

Any members who are keen to get back out on the water please drop us a message on Facebook or email: club.secretary@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com

Once again Thank You for your understanding during this difficult period. Hopefully we are slowly moving towards a “New Normal”

SPRING UPDATE

As Christmas becomes a distant memory we are fast approaching spring and this can only mean one thing – PUGNEYS!

Over the next few weeks we will be giving our container a spring clean and some much needed TLC as well as checking over our stock of boats in preparation for the summer season.

Last year was a bumper year for paddlers at Pugneys with large numbers of both regulars and newcomers every week. The weather was fantastic with hot sunny days almost every weekend and everyone having a fantastic time each session.

We may even invest in some bigger and better water guns this year and we all know what that means – Andy gets even more of a soaking every week!

We will once again be running taster sessions throughout the season allowing non members to come along and have a go on the various boats and SUP’s we have at the lake.

We will also look to run Paddlesport courses for our younger members, these courses will give a basic insight into paddlesports including safety, correct kit, basic paddling etc. After completing the course each participant will receive a British Canoeing certificate. For anyone who enjoys paddling and wants to progress there are lots of courses available from British Canoeing ranging from volunteers right up to coach level.

We hope to see many regular faces from last year as well as lots of newcomers who want to have a try at paddlesports.
