POSTPONED: White Water Practice: Sowerby Bridge

The next white water practice session will be stepped up a little and is taking place at the Sowerby Bridge slalom course this coming Saturday, 1pm. Meet up point is here. For sat nav, HX6 2LN will get you very near.

Sowerby Bridge has some good grade 2 pool/drop rapids to practice on and good for surfing.

If anyone requires equipment please let Andy Walker know by email. Please ensure that you wear suitable clothing and footwear for kayaking in – no wellies, no bike helmets etc. An old pair of trainers is good – barefoot or socks will not be permitted. If you are unsure, drop us an email.

If it is going to be extremely cold, we may cancel the session so please let us know if you plan to attend so we can keep you up to date.

Cheers

Andy & Tony.

2013 Washburn Calendar now available

The 2013 Washburn Calendar is available here:

http://www.vern.ws/sites/lsf/washburn/pdf/calendar.pdf

Note that the WYCC organised Washburn weekend will be held on 8th/9th June and is a great weekend for club members and family to experience rafting as well as providing an opportunity for non-members to paddle the river.

The club calendar has also been updated with the first Washburn release of the year on Sunday 27th Jan 2013 – a WYCC club Washburn paddle will be held on this date but note that this isn’t a release for the faint hearted and requires a degree of paddling ability as it can be quite challenging.

White water practice, River Calder at Healey, 12th Jan, 1pm

We are planning to run a white water practice session on the River Calder at Healey on Satuday 12th Jan at 1pm.

It is an ideal opportunity for those new to moving water and would like to learn how to handle their boat. If you have the skills and just fancy a paddle for a few hours, you too are welcome.

If anyone requires equipment (boats, paddles, spraydecks, helmets etc) please let Andy Walker know before Friday 11th Jan by email or text/mobile 07748 111819.

Please ensure that you wear suitable clothing and footwear for kayaking in – jeans and wellies are a bad idea. An old pair of trainers is good if you don’t have suitable wet shoes – barefoot or socks will not be permitted.

It is IMPORTANT that people let us know if they plan to attend so we can plan accordingly and also communicate any last minute changes due to water levels etc.

If you wish to come along, please confirm your attendance via email to one of these club members: Andy Walker or Tony Thompson. Note that the session is only open to club members.

Nearest postcode for the Healey meeting point is WF5 8NE.

River Irwell, 6th Jan

Sorry for the short notice but a few of us are planning to paddle the Irwell on Sun, 6th Jan, 09:30 – 15:30.

Meet at Nuttall Country Park, Ramsbottom at 9:30am. This is a mainly grade 2 run, including an 18ft weir which we slide down.

If you wish to join us, please ensure you let me know (tonythompson@pobox.com or text my usual mobile number).
This is very important due to potential river levels and ensuring sufficient safety cover.

Thanks,

Tony.

River Tees, Cotherstone to Barnard Castle, 16th Dec

The trip this Sunday is on the River Tees between Cotherstone and Barnard Castle. This stretch is a classic grade 2 and is suitable for most club members. The trip is mainly flat water with two stretches of white water (no worse than Slenningford or Appletreewick Falls). The weather forecast is for 6 Deg C and fine. Meet at the Bacon Butty bar on the A66 at 9.00am as the shuttle will take about 20mins and the trip is about 3 hours without a stop.

For those who want to you can carry on down to Abbey Rapids which take about another hour or even do Abbey Rapids to Winston as a separate trip.

Please let me know you are coming (email or text) so that I can plan accordingly.

Regards
